Behind the Sofa was a series of videos included in each release of The Collection Blu-ray sets featuring cast and crew members from the show watching serials from the correspondent season.

The series observes various members of the Doctor Who cast and crew - not always those limited to that specific season, and often cutting between different groups - watching a Doctor Who serial in cutdown form and reacting to it, similar to a DVD commentary track. Unlike a commentary track, however, the video is edited to feature specific moments and reactions, or cast/crew sharing specific anecdotes.

Behind the Sofa featurettes were produced for each individual serial, and have been included on each release of The Collection as of March 2024.

Series notes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • In the editions included with seasons 12, 18 and 19, the opening theme for the show segued into the Doctor Who theme, however the Doctor Who theme had been digitally slowed without reducing its pitch. This is corrected as of the season 10 release, with the theme playing at the correct speed.
  • The Behind the Sofa segments included in the season 12 did not properly format the credit for Mark Ayres as Dubbing Mixer - while the credits otherwise presented the position in italics, "Dubbing Mixer" was presented in the same typeface formatting as the credited names. This error did not occur in later sets.
  • Season 12 was the only set where the BBC Worldwide logo appears in the end credits. From season 19 onward, the credits ended with the BBC Studios logo.
  • For the Season 2, 8, 17, 22 and 24 instalments, which were produced during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-22, guests were seated in their own individual chairs instead of on a sofa. There was also a plastic divider separating them, except for married couple Dhawan and Mohindra.
