Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Spacecraft Begins at Home is boarded by the Dog Pirates in the 21st century. As the crew are mascaraed during the pirates' search for the Objet D'Oom crewmember Phelps plans to jettison all of the ship's cargo. In the hold he encounters Terrance and allows him to take the artifact for safe keeping.
Back on Earth Terrance has disappeared and left both the Exchange and the artifact to Simon. The artifact uninterests Simon until he realises that it has been stolen by the eccentric Anthony Marvelle - alongside his Poodle Missy. Simon attends a poetry reading in support of his friend Kelly, but when Marvelle is revealed as one of the guests he confronts him over the theft but Marvelle denies all knowledge. Iris Wildthyme comforts Simon and voices her own suspicions about Marvelle. The pair get drunk together and Simon is shocked when he returns Iris to her bus and witnesses it dematerialise. That same night Kelly sleeps with Marvelle at the Duke's Legs hotel.
The next morning Iris visits Simon and tells him everything about her bus and travelling companion Panda, and secret organisation MIAOW. They visit the MIAOW's headquarters, and Iris updates Jenny on the whereabouts of the Objet D'Oom - Jenny visits the hotel that was Marvelle's last known location but finds nothing. Along with Simon and Panda, Iris visits the Begins at Home and questions sole survivor Harfolg. Shortly before succumbing to his injuries and dying, Harfolg informs them about the Dog Pirates' attack.
Returning to Earth the trio recruit Kelly, and the four of them travel to Montmartre, Paris in June 1894 where they witness the start of a Martian invasion. In the past Kelly spots Marvelle, and Iris takes her companions to South Kensington in 1973 only to discover that Marvelle has stolen the Pinking Shears and is now able to traverse time and space. Once more on Earth, Kelly decides against travelling with Iris and the group recruits a new member in Servo-furnishing Barbra - who has escaped from MIAOW. Using a memory crystal that Barbra obtained from MIAOW, the group are able to track Marvelle down to Valcea.
Marvelle, who has now abducted Jenny, visits Paris and gives instructions to the Martian Time Agents. Around this time he also sabotages the Celestial Omnibus and steals Iris' diaries. While visiting the Hotel Miramar, Marvelle leaves the Objet D'Oom in Jenny's room and she is visited in her dream by Euphemia, the first empress of Hyspero, and the pair form an alliance. Meanwhile Kelly befriends Magda, but Marvelle eventually arrives and hypnotises Kelly to join him before attacking Magda.
Staying at The Winged God Iris and her companions witness a carriage drawn by horse-like creatures arrive and take several distressed individuals away for a suspected sacrificial ritual. The group decides to visit the City of Glass where the sacrifices are taken, but they are forced to manually drive the Celestial Omnibus after Marvelle's sabotage. During the journey Simon and Panda sneak through a rift in time to Vince Cosmos' performance in 1973 where they are able to save him and the Tomorrow Twins from Martian assassins. Both Simon and Panda are tempted to attend an afterparty but, following an encounter with a future version of Iris, they return to the bus.
