Sea of Souls was a BBC Scotland drama about paranormal investigations which ran from 2004 to 2007. It starred Bill Paterson and was initially produced by Phil Collinson.

Collinson's involvement is what makes the show interesting to those researching the production history of Doctor Who. A few people, notably Barbara Southcott and Ray Holman followed Collinson from Born and Bred, the show he launched in 2002, to Sea of Souls, and then to Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Others, like director of photography Ernie Vincze and post-production co-ordinator Marie Brown, were directly pinched from the staff of Sea of Souls and would have an almost immeasurable effect on the way Doctor Who was made under Collinson. Many actors were likewise common to both Sea of Souls and one of the DWU programmes. Not all of these actors were actually on Sea of Souls when Collinson was, but he did work with Michelle Collins and Peter Capaldi on Souls prior to their Doctor Who work on his watch.
