Synopsis[[edit] | [edit source]]

In the latest segment of his Doctor Who 50th anniversary quest to interview someone connected with every single Doctor Who story, Toby Hadoke gets right up to date...and heads into the future!

We come right up to date with someone who has been at the helm of some of the most recent episodes and - in a first for Who's Round - we get an anecdote from a couple of stories that... have yet to be transmitted! This open and perceptive gentleman explains why he thinks that Doctor Who is a like a musical, tackles a couple of moral dilemmas, and explains which villain was modelled on Peter Stringfellow!

Topics covered[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • Why Saul Metzstein at first rejected offers to work on Doctor Who: he hadn't seen any of the new series, and thought it was still a studio programme with cheap and creaky sets.
  • How he got into directing at the BBC.
  • How much Matt Smith really carries the show.
  • Dinosaurs on a Spaceship
  • A Town Called Mercy
    • The Doctor's gun wielding in Mercy.
    • Filming the episode like a Western without spoiling either element.
    • Finding the right timing that works both on Doctor Who and on a Western.
    • The choice to get American actors for Mercy's cast.
  • Tendencies in Doctor Who directing, but great flexibility, allowing for much choice and variety.
  • Shooting Doctor Who as if it's a musical, like Singin' in the Rain.
  • Using music in Doctor Who, adapted to the modern era. Despite frequent complaints by those who worked on old Who about loud or excessive music, it's necessary to get with the times, and keep with the sort tempo that audiences are used to now, to keep them interested.
  • Saul Metzstein had no part in casting. The producers decided on Ben Browder for the part of Isaac. Mostly, casting is done by the director and the casting director, but he had little control.
  • The Snowmen
  • The Crimson Horror preview information
    • "Gothic and weird", quite strange to film, but he loves the script
  • The final episode of the series, not yet released, whose name he can't remember.
  • Saul Metzstein's then-ongoing work on the first series of The Musketeers, which starred Peter Capaldi at the time
