In the prose equivalent "Character A said the following thing to Character B, who was in bed" would count as an appearance of Character B uncontroversially, and establishing via Character A's dialogue that Character B is there is just the audio version of conveying that fact. So I'd say yes, pending a new thread to do what the one in the Lost Forums could not and clarify what we call "appearances".
