The Krafayis are a race of bird-like reptilian creatures. Their planet of origin is unknown. They travel through the universe, feeding on the people and animals on the planets they land on. They are invisible to the naked eye, but one could be seen by Vincent van Gogh for unknown reasons, perhaps due to Van Gogh's unique way of perceiving the world around him or it could be linked to his depression. The Krafayis have travelled the universe since the late Dark Times and have a unique defence system where they cannot be seen by the naked eye. They have voyaged across the universe in packs and devouring many life forms. One was left behind on Earth and was scavanging on humans. This Krafayis could only be seen by the Famous Artist Vincent van Gogh. When the Doctor and Amy Pond travelled back in time to 1889 after seeing the Krafayis painted in van Gogh's Church at Auvers, they discovered the body of a young Girl the Krafayis had attacked. The Krafayis later attacked Amy, prompting Vincent and the Doctor to come to her aid. The Doctor could not see it, but later saw and identified the Krafayis with a Visual Recognition Device. Later on, when Vincent started painting the Church at Auvers he spotted the Krafayis through one of the church windows, as seen in his painting in 2010. When the Doctor attempted to confront the Krafayis the creature attacked. When the Doctor, Amy and Vincent attempted to hide in the church the Krafayis started wandering around the room as if it were lost. The Doctor realised that it was blind and that was the reason it had been left on Earth. However before the Doctor could make peace with the Krafayis, the creature charged towards them, inadvertently impaling itself on van Gogh's easel. Fatally wounded, the Krafayis lay there, the Doctor interpreting that it was afraid and trying to soothe it. Vincent genuinely felt remorse for the creature's death, feeling that he shared some similarities to it due to their treatment by their peers. He noted that "It wasn't without mercy at all, but without sight". (DW: Vincent and the Doctor)

The Krafayis were a species of space-faring omnivorous predators.

Biology[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Krafayis were large creatures with reptilian and bird-like traits. They had parrot-like beaks, quill-like horns, two wattles on the sides of their heads, long necks and quills down their tail.

The Krafayis were generally invisible, giving them the perfect defence. They could be seen by Vincent van Gogh, apparently due to his unique perception of the world, and in the reflection in a mirror on the species matcher. (TV: Vincent and the Doctor) They could also be seen in other reflections, such as in water. (PROSE: Blind Fury)

The Krafayis had yellow blood. (PROSE: Blind Fury)

The Krafayis' data on the species matcher. (TV: Vincent and the Doctor)

Life cycle[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Krafayis were capable of travelling through the universe, moving from planet to planet to hunt. They preferred to travel to planets with oxygen/nitrogen atmospheres, such as Earth. They hunted in large packs with a strict hierarchy and had territories which spanned star systems. Eventually, they would depart the planet, leaving behind the weaker Krafayis. These Krafayis would be unable to rejoin the pack and in their loneliness would cause destruction and chaos until they were killed. (TV: Vincent and the Doctor)

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Krafayis were believed to be an ancient species from the Dark Times. Legends say that in the Old Times of Gallifrey, a Krafayis attacked the village of Slothe, killing many. A Gallifreyan, Presus, eventually confronted the Krafayis and after three days of fighting, the Krafayis was killed. (PROSE: Blind Fury)

In November 1890, a lone Krafayis was stranded in Auvers-sur-Oise, France because it was blind. It was responsible for many deaths in the area before it was stopped by the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond and Vincent van Gogh. The Krafayis was accidentally killed by van Gogh who expressed remorse at its death when he realised it was scared, not hostile. (TV: Vincent and the Doctor)

Alternate timeline[[edit] | [edit source]]

In an alternate timeline where the Eleventh Doctor never intervened, the Krafayis was painted into one of Vincent van Gogh's paintings. After the Doctor travelled back in time to investigate, the Krafayis was no longer depicted in the paintings. (TV: Vincent and the Doctor)

Other references[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Ninth Doctor once used the phrase "running around like a headless Krafayis." (AUDIO: The Bleeding Heart)

Romana once listed Krafayis as creatures she recognised from nursery rhymes on Gallifrey. (AUDIO: Babblesphere)
