Cashman is openly gay, and was partnered with fellow actor Paul Cottingham.[2] Cashman is particularly notable in gay civil rights for having help found the Stonewall organisation in 1989 with several other individuals, including Ian McKellen.[3] Both Cashman and McKellen would collaborate together on fundraising efforts for the Iris Trust - which raised funds to help support Stonewall and other important research.[3] Alongside Cottingham, he later left acting in the 1990s to pursue a full-time career in politics.[2]
