May was, at least in the northern hemisphere of Earth, a spring month associated with the May Day festival, particularly in some parts of Europe. Both the Third Doctor and Tegan Jovanka were directly involved in May Day celebrations, both with sinister undertones. The Doctor was assaulted by Morris dancers during one May Pole dance in Little Hodcombe, (TV: The Dæmons) while Jovanka had to endure being converted to the Queen of the May in an historical re-enactment.
