Francesca Latimer was the daughter of Captain Latimer and sister of Digby Latimer, who called her "Frannie". The children and their father lived in London. Francesca watched her governess, "Miss Montague", die in the last seconds of Christmas Eve, 1892, from massive internal injuries stemming from a fall from cloud level. Francesca's prior governess died approximately a year earlier from drowning; that governess began to appear in Francesca's dreams in late 1892, chastising Francesca and stating that she was coming out of the frozen pond on Christmas to get her.
