The Dead were male natives of Nooma who lost their Promotion fights and had their hearts ripped out. They were buried and the Land would resurrect them in another form, called the Dead. In their new bodies, they were short humanoids with blue eyes and skin that looked like wood. They could communicate through telepathic pseudoviruses. (PROSE: Speed of Flight)
