John Smith was created by the Doctor as a means to understand his Human companion Bernice's grief at the death of Guy de Carnac.
He was a Scotsman, supposedly came from Aberdeen. DWM: Prelude: Human Nature) He taught history, specifically that of the Bronze Age, at Hulton Academy for Boys in Farringham, Norfolk. He was briefly the lover of Joan Redfern (NA: Human Nature).
