Father Thane was the head of the Church on Florana in its early history. He was loyal to the High Priest, a Dalek who claimed to be an emissary of God. He heard the Dalek talking to the Fifth Doctor, and admitting that it was not a true god. Realising that he had been used all this time, he killed the Dalek, and tried to use a weapon known as the Cleansing Fire to wipe all non-believers from the face of the planet. He was killed when Garthak crashed a fighter jet into the cathedral to stop the Cleansing Fire. (AUDIO: The Elite)
