English actor Matt Smith who, at 26, will become the youngest actor to date to play the Doctor (succeeding previous record-holder Peter Davison), was officially confirmed by the BBC as the new Doctor on 3 January 2009.
  • As of January 2009 it has not yet been confirmed whether Smith will appear as the new Doctor in any of the upcoming specials, though it is generally assumed he will film a regeneration sequence.
