Adam was the scribe of Geoffrey Chaucer. In 1400, the First Doctor entrusted him with the manuscripts for The Canterbury Tales, instructing him to take them to Wales and have them copied. Chaucer regarded Adam as a "ninny" and believed in his care they were "as good as lost". However, the Doctor was confident, based on history, that his task would be completed.
