When the Wolves Came was a short prose story published in September 2014 in Doctor Who The Official Annual 2015. It is the first licensed short story in any medium to feature the Twelfth Doctor. While not expressed directly, the story's setting in the a ruinous 22nd century London and its allusion to Bedfordshire make it easy to identify it as taking place during the Dalek invasion, which first featured in The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

Synopsis

Amongst the rubble of 22nd century London, Simon must finds he has a protector in the form of a blue box...

Plot

In the 22nd century, a boy named Simon is trying to survive in a London desolated by the Dalek invasion. Wolves roam the streets and Simon has to flee from them after an excursion to find food. He drops the tin of baked beans he found and runs into the TARDIS which has been keeping him safe for months. Touching the console, he pleads for assistance and suddenly the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald materialise near him.

The Doctor says that the TARDIS has been stuck in the 22nd century and that Simon must have used the telepathic circuits, allowing him to materialise the craft around the Time Lord and Clara just before they were attacked by an Aaraanandal slime beast. He then takes the boy outside of the 'danger zone' to Bedfordshire.
