Piers Wenger replaced Julie Gardner as Head of Drama at BBC Wales at the turn of 2009. By virtue of that promotion, he became one of the executive producers of Doctor Who. One of his initial responsibilities — shared with his fellow execs Steven Moffat and Beth Willis — was to help cast Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. He also became an executive producer on The Sarah Jane Adventures after Gardner's departure. As of 2011, he is the only person on the BBC Wales team to executive produce Doctor Who universe shows with both Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat.

Wenger was appointed Controller of BBC Drama in late 2016, and introduced Ben Irving as Head of Drama Development the following year.

He was a frequent interviewee on Doctor Who Confidential from The Eleventh Doctor to its final episode. He was also an executive producer for Doctor Who - The Adventure Games.
