1999 was a year in which a number of events important to the production of Doctor Who and its spin-offs occurred.
- BBC Audio, after a six-year hiatus, resumed reissuing audio recordings of Doctor Who stories that no longer existed in complete visual form in the BBC Archives. Previously, these recordings had been issued exclusively on twin cassette, but were now also released on CD. Released this month was The Massacre, which was released under the shorter title, The Massacre.
- 9 January - Big Finish Productions recorded their first special release Buried Treasures with the first original Bernice Summerfield stories at Gary Gillatt and Ed Salt's flat.
- 6 and 7 March - The first original Doctor Who audio drama The Sirens of Time by Big Finish Productions was recorded at Crosstown Studios.
- 13 and 14 March - Big Finish recorded Bernice Summerfield story Just War at Crosstown Studios.
- 26 and 27 June - Big Finish recorded Doctor Who story Phantasmagoria at the Nu Groove Studios.
- 17 and 18 July - Big Finish recorded Doctor Who story Whispers of Terror at the Nu Groove Studios.
- 24 and 25 July - Big Finish recorded Doctor Who story The Land of the Dead at the Nu Groove Studios.
- 4 and 5 September - Big Finish recorded Doctor Who story The Fearmonger at the Nu Groove Studios.
- 7 September - Big Finish recorded Bernice Summerfield story Dragons' Wrath at Harvey Summers's studio.
- 23 October - Big Finish recorded Doctor Who story The Marian Conspiracy at the Nu Groove Studios.
- 13 November - Doctor Who was featured on the cover of the Radio Times, promoting upcoming rebroadcasts of the classic episodes.
- 13 and 14 November - Big Finish recorded Doctor Who story The Genocide Machine at the Nu Groove Studios.
- 20 and 21 November - Big Finish recorded Doctor Who story Red Dawn at the Nu Groove Studios.
