Lucy Shaw was a lecturer of medieval church architecture at the University of Reading. Her mother, Emily Shaw, was disappointed that she was teaching at a redbrick university but proud that she was "changing the face" of her subject.

In the 1970s, Lucy's first monograph, concerning misericords, was published. When her sister, Liz, asked their mother for advice, Emily remarked that Lucy would be surprised to hear that she had done so. Lucy and her children met with Emily for lunch one weekend but Liz was too busy with Mars Probe 7 to join them.

Emily did not tell Lucy about the letters that members of her committee had been receiving as she knew that, unlike Liz, she would become hysterical. (AUDIO: The Last Post)
