Mesh Cos was a Councillor in the City of the Saved, and was a member of the last human species - described as "heartmurmuringly beautiful". She was the mother of Lon Shel, and conceived her through parthenogenesis, "a perfectly valid lifestyle choice". While alive, she was the primary inventor of the Universal Machine through stealing Great House technology. As a result of her actions, in an attempt to create something that would outlive the human race, she instead called down the wrath of the Great Houses and doomed humanity to extinction.
