A stew was a kind of hot food dish, similar to a soup, which could be made with a variety of ingredients.

Stewed jellyfish was one of the items on the menu of a dinner that the Chinese delegate to the World Peace Conference, Fu Peng, offered to the Third Doctor. Though the Doctor seemed to relish the thought, the Brig's face betrayed his lack of enthusiasm. (TV: The Mind of Evil)

Bouillabaisse was a fish stew. The Fourth Doctor suggested that he and Romana II eat some when they were in Paris. (TV: City of Death)
