Janis Joplin was a famous rock star who once gave the Doctor a coat which he loved and treasured. He wore it regularly during his tenth incarnation. (TV: The Christmas Invasion, Gridlock, AUDIO: The Rising Night) The original coat was destroyed by Rose-the-cat, according to one source. (COMIC: A Rose by Any Other Name)
Part of the 1960s counterculture movement, she was a resident of the Haight in San Francisco and played at 1967's Human Be-In. (PROSE: Wonderland)
Behind the scenes
Although it's never quite directly mentioned in the DWU, Joplin was the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company.
The Doctor's claims may be in reference to the coat Leonard Cohen sings about in his 1971 song "Famous Blue Raincoat". Cohen had a relationship with Joplin, which he sings about in his 1974 song "Chelsea Hotel N.2", and according to an interview with Cohen, the raincoat mentioned in the former song referred to a blue raincoat he'd once owned and treasured, and which was lost - or possibly pinched by Joplin.
