Colonel Paternik was the head of the Bereznik Secret Police.

In the late 2040s, he was alerted that Bereznik radio operators had intercepted a message from the World Navy submarine WN7 to Kiel. Upon learning that they had the heavily injured Agent Twenty One of the Universal Secret Service aboard the ship, Paternik ordered an assassination squad to Kiel Hospital to kill him if he survived his operation. The party was killed in a gun battle with Agent Tina Palamac that also resulted in her death. Holding him personally responsible for Tina's murder, Twenty One resigned from the USS after his recovery so that he would be able to track down Paternik outside the bounds of the organisation's policies. (COMIC: Andromeda Or Die)

Anticipating that Twenty One would seek revenge, when he finally arrived in Bereznik, he instead found Colonel Tobolski in charge of the Secret Police with Paternik reportedly facing the death sentence in prison for incompetence, although he was actually in hiding. Paternik and Tobolski used this fact and his departure from the USS to "corrupt" Twenty One into joining the Secret Police. When Twenty One finished helping build a deadly toy factory and his usefulness to Bereznik was at an end, he revealed he knew about Tobolski's true intentions and went about locating Paternik. He eventually found him in a secret room at Secret Police Headquarters and shot him, taking the unconscious Paternik to an aeroplane. Twenty One crossed the border to Germany and handed him over to the police in Berlin, thinking that he would be imprisoned for a long time after the World Court were finished with him. (COMIC: The Bitter Cold Dish)
