John Lumic's wheelchair was used by its eponymous owner as a primary means of short-distance transportation. Such features incorporated into the wheelchair included a motion control lever, automated life-support systems, and an oxygen tank. Additionally, there were doses of medication which would be taken intravenously. (TV: Rise of the Cybermen)

Betraying his boss, Mr Crane severely damaged the life-support systems. Inadvertently, Lumic made his Cybermen aware of the fact he was in pain, and the latter judged him as unfit to carry on living in human form, thus promptly had him converted into the Cyber-Controller. After conversion, the wheelchair was presumably incinerated along with Lumic's body. (TV: The Age of Steel)

Behind the scenes

John Lumic was not originally intended to use a wheelchair. It was written in after actor Roger Lloyd Pack broke his leg shortly before filming on Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel was set to commence.[1]
