In the Unbound Universe, Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart remembered (AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil [+]Loading...["Sympathy for the Devil (audio story)"]) the 20th century Auton invasion of Earth, successfully foiled by the Third Doctor in another universe, (TV: Spearhead from Space [+]Loading...["Spearhead from Space (TV story)"]) as the Plastic Purges, a notable disaster he had to survive through without the Doctor.

UNIT, led by the Brigadier, attempted to stop the Nestene Consciousness's plan (AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil [+]Loading...["Sympathy for the Devil (audio story)"]) to take over the Earth using Autons, disguised as shop dummies, which they distributed using the company Auto Plastics, at least in the Third Doctor's universe. (TV: Spearhead from Space [+]Loading...["Spearhead from Space (TV story)"])

He later took the Unbound Doctor to task for not being there when he needed him, such as during the Plastic Purges. The Doctor had been redirected to the wrong time and place, landing instead in 1997 Hong Kong. (AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil [+]Loading...["Sympathy for the Devil (audio story)"])

Aftermath

In a later incident, known as the "Fake Flower Fiasco" in the Daily Mail, Lethbridge-Stewart suspected a second invasion was underway when he found plastic flowers. (AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil [+]Loading...["Sympathy for the Devil (audio story)"]) In the Third Doctor's universe, this was indeed the second Auton invasion of Earth, led by the Master. (TV: Terror of the Autons [+]Loading...["Terror of the Autons (TV story)"])
