Hindle was a member of the expedition to assess Deva Loka's suitability for colonization, and second-in-command to Sanders. They became mentally unstable when the Kinda attempted to telepathically communicate with them, and the Mara worsened the situation until they nearly detonated a bomb that would have destroyed the Kinda and themselves.
