The Doctor gave a good word for Martha at UNIT. She was approached by a woman from UNIT who asked her if she wanted to join the organization, and she agreed. Martha called the Doctor just as she, together with UNIT, was about to attack the ATMOS factory which secretly formed a key part of a Sontaran invasion plan. At the time, she worked under the by-the-book Colonol Mace who was in charge of the operation. A few minutes later she was kidnapped by two solders under Sontaran control and taken to her to a cloning pool, where they started copying her body. She then was put to sleep but kept alive as a her clone was about to aid the Sontarans and needed access to her memories. (DW: The Sontaran Stratagem) Martha's clone died soon after the Doctor rescued the real Martha. While chatting with the Doctor and Donna inside the TARDIS after the defeat of the Sontarans, Martha turned down the Doctor's offer to let her travel again with him. As soon as she had made her refusal unknown force took control of the ship and dragged it into the Vortex (DW: The Poison Sky).

Martha called the Doctor just as she, together with UNIT, was about to attack the ATMOS factory. The TARDIS landed just outside where she made the call and she remet the Doctor and then met Donna Noble. Donna noticed a ring on her finger and Martha told her that she was engaged to Tom Milligan. Martha told the Doctor about ATMOS and introduced him to Colonol Mace who was in charge of the operation. Later that day she warned Donna Noble to keep her family safe because of what had happened to her family the following year. A few minutes later she was told that Colonel Mace wanted to see her but was kidnapped by two solders under Sontaran control and taken to her to a cloning pool, where they started copying her body. The length of time Martha spent travelling with the Doctor during her first adventures in the TARDIS has never been defined, but is known to include approximately three months spent in 1913 (DW:Human Nature / Family of Blood), a year in an alternate timeline (DW: Last of the Time Lords), and an undefined period trapped in 1969 that was long enough to require her to find employment in order to support the Doctor (DW:Blink).

The Clone then went and found the Doctor and went into the UNIT truck as she was doing that Captain Price was launching a Nuclear Strike at the Sontaran ship. The Clone evaded it and stopped it. Later the Valiant came down and started firing at the ATMOS factory destroying some of it but not most of it. The Doctor followed a trace and found Martha a sleep. He woke her up but the clone still had Marthas memories. Marthas clone died soon after having no power. Martha then witnessed Luke Rattigan go into a teleporter and blow the Sontaran ship up. She later was about to part company with the Doctor once more but the TARDIS was pulled away, out of his control. (DW: The Poison Sky)

Dr Martha Jones worked as a medical student at the Royal Hope Hospital in London when she first met the Doctor. Eventually, after deciding to leave him, the Doctor ensured that she would find work with UNIT.

Profile

Biography

Family

Martha's parents were France and Clive Jones. She had an older sister, Letitia "Tish" Jones and a younger brother, Leo, who lived with his girlfriend and had a child. On the day that Martha first met the Doctor, her family had a row at her brother Leo's 21st birthday due to Clive insisting on bringing his young girlfriend Annalise, much to his estranged wife's disgust. (DW: Smith and Jones) Martha's cousin, Adeola Oshodi worked at Torchwood 1 before her death (DW: Army of Ghosts).

Joining the Doctor

The twenty-three-year-old Martha was working at Royal Hope when she encountered the Doctor. She encountered him on the street, then gave him a cursory physical (and learnt that he had two hearts) and later helped him defeat the Plasmavore "Florence Finnegan" when Royal Hope was transported to the Moon by the Judoon. She later joined him on his travels. The Doctor insisted, however, that he had not brought Martha aboard the TARDIS as a replacement for his previous companion, Rose Tyler. (DW: Smith and Jones)

After returning home in The Lazurus Experiment, the Doctor allowed her to stay on board the TARDIS. He gave her a mobile phone upgrade and a TARDIS key (DW:42).

The exact length of time Martha spent travelling with the Doctor during her initial tenure in the TARDIS has never been defined, but is known to include several extensive intervals, including approximately three months spent in the early 20th Century (DW:Human Nature, Family of Blood), a year in an alternate timeline (DW: Last of the Time Lords), and an undefined period trapped in 1969 that was long enough to require her to find employment in order to support the Doctor (DW:Blink).

Time away from the Doctor

When the Master took over Earth, Martha pretended to make a weapon that would kill the Master. She said that she had witnessed the Toclafane burn the islands of Japan. She spent a year on earth telling everyone to think of the Doctor at a specific time so that the Master could be defeated. This plan worked and the Master was shot by his wife Lucy Saxon. As a result of the destruction of the Master's Paradox Machine, only Martha, her family, and everyone else who was on board the Valiant remembered that year spent with the Master. She decided she wanted to go and complete her medical studies, but gave the Doctor her enhanced mobile phone, saying that she might want to return to travelling with him in the future. (DW: Last of the Time Lords)
