The Sontarans (pronounced "Sohn-TAHR-ans") are a belligerent and militaristic clone race. The Doctor has encountered them at least four times during his travels.

Physical characteristics

A clone race, the Sontarans are humanoids with large, bulbous heads and stocky bodies. There are apparently no female Sontarans. Their hands have two fingers and a thumb. They are typically seen wearing their distinctive battle armor, which resembles a space suit, and is entirely black except for a silver insignia on the helmet, which has a small crested ridge running from the forehead to the base of the neck. They are enormously strong and very tough. One of the few ways to hurt or kill a Sontaran in his armor is via a small access port at the back of the neck. The port is normally used by the Sontarans as a feeding tube during space- or timeflight.

History

The Sontarans have achieved crude time-travel technology which is effective though not on par with the Time Lords.

The Sontarans once attempted to invade Gallifrey (in the episode The Invasion Of Time) but were defeated by The Doctor, Leela, and K-9.

Culture

The Sontarans are engaged in a destructive war with the Rutans, a race of jellyfish-like aliens capable of storing and discharging enormous amounts of electricity, and changing their appearance to appear humanoid.
