Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb, better known as Saladin (1137/1138 – March 4, 1193) was a Kurdish Saracen Sultan of Egypt and Syria, and military leader during the Third Crusade. One of his brothers was Saphadin. He had a reputation as a democratic man and the First Doctor had always wanted to meet him, though he was not afforded the opportunity of doing so during his visit to late 12th century Palestine.
