Like the Doctor, the renegade Time Lord known as the Master used many aliases. However, while the Doctor used false names on a fairly ad hoc basis to avoid awkward questions, the Master usually adopted them in order to further whatever scheme he was currently embarked upon.

Variations on the Master

The Master

The Master effectively discarded his former name. He and the Doctor referred to each other by their titles as a matter of course. While earlier in his life he was heard saying that he was "known as" the Master, by the time of his final confrontation with the Doctor's tenth incarnation, he considered "the Master" his name (TV: The End of Time).

UNIT era aliases

During a period when the Master came into frequent and regular contact with Earth's United Nations Intelligence Taskforce and the Doctor's third incarnation, he used aliases, many of which were plays of the name "Master".

Colonel Masters

Used when infiltrating Rex Farrel's plastics company. (TV: Terror of the Autons)

Reverend Magister

Used when infiltrating Devil's End. Magister is Latin for Master. (TV: The Dæmons)

Professor Thascalos

Used when infiltrating the Newton Institute. Thascalos is Greek for Master. (TV: The Time Monster)

'Duke' Dominus

Used when impersonating a gangster in 1930s Chicago. Dominus is also Latin for Master. (PROSE: The Duke of Dominoes)

Dr Emil Keller

Used in the Master when assuming the identity of the creator of the Keller Machine. Emil is derived from the Latin word aemulus, meaning rival, and Keller is derived from Old English cwellere, meaning executioner. (TV: The Mind of Evil)

The Adjudicator (Martin Jurgens)

Used when posing as an Adjudicator. (TV: Colony in Space)

Mwalimu

Used while hiding beneath Colonel Spindleton's manor house in 1979. It is Swahili for 'Teacher' or 'Master'.(AUDIO:Trail of the White Worm)

Estro

Used while posing as an adviser to Lord Haldoran follwing the 22nd century Dalek invasion on 2299 Earth, in an effort to procure a Dalek matter-transmuter. Estro is Esperanto for Master. (PROSE Legacy of the Daleks).

Gospodar

Used when attempting to access the TITAN Array in order to destroy the Chronovores. Gospodar is Serbian/Croatian/Slovenian for Master. (PROSE: The Quantum Archangel)

Mr. Seta

Used aboard the starship Gallery. It was another anagram of Master. (AUDIO: Dust Breeding)

The Portreeve

Used by the Tremas incarnation when attempting to trap the Fifth Doctor in Castrovalva. (TV: Castrovalva)

Kalid

Used by the Tremas Master while attempting to take control of the Xeraphin gestalt. As Kalid, he affected the identity of a vaguely Arabian sorcerer. Kalid derives from the Indian Kalidasa meaning servant of Kali, an Indian goddess of time and change and usually depicted as being dark and violent. (TV: Time-Flight)

Sir Gilles Estram

Used by the Tremas Master when attempting to avert the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. "Estram" was an anagram of "Master." (TV: The King's Demons)

The Sheriff

Used by this incarnation trying to gain access to the regenerative fountain near Eternity. (PROSE: A Town Called Eternity)

Major Kreer

Used when allied with the Tzun in 1950s America. (PROSE: First Frontier)

Doctor John Smith

Used while living as an amnesiac on an unnamed colony world. The Doctor also frequently used this alias. (AUDIO: Master)

Bruce

The name of the paramedic whose body the Master possessed in San Francisco in 1999. The Master assumed his identity on a number of occasions during this affair. (TV: Doctor Who)

Professor Yana

Main article: Yana

Used after he had transformed himself into a human by means of a Chameleon Arch. (TV: Utopia) The Doctor's discovery of the Master's survival after the Last Great Time War had been foreshadowed by an encounter with the Face of Boe, who has uttered "You are not alone" as his dying words. (TV: Gridlock) The Doctor later learned YANA was an acronym for this. Yana was shot by Chantho and regenerated into...

Harold Saxon

A human alias adopted by the new incarnation of the Master, in which form he had himself elected as British Prime Minister (TV: The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords). However, by the time of his final confrontation with the Doctor's tenth incarnation, the Master had distanced himself from the Saxon alias and was once again calling himself, simply, the Master. (TV: The End of Time)

'Mister Saxon' is an anagram of 'Master No Six' and John Simm, who played this incarnation of the Master, was the sixth major incarnation of the character.

Behind the scenes

  • During Anthony Ainley's tenure as the Master, pseudonyms made from anagrams of 'Tony Ainley' were often used in the credits — both on-screen and in Radio Times — for the Master's disguises, such as Neil Toynay for the Portreeve in TV: Castrovalva.
  • Another craftier pseudonym was used in Radio Times for TV: The King's Demons, when Sir Gilles was listed as being played by 'James Stoker' — an anagram of 'Master's Joke'.
