Vastra Investigates: A Christmas Prequel was a webcast and prequel produced for the 2012 Christmas special. It was the second prequel to be produced, after The Great Detective, which aired in November during Children in Need.
Synopsis
Madame Vastra, accompanied by her loyal companions Jenny Flint and Strax, is called upon to investigate a Victorian murder mystery. But where is the Doctor?
Plot
Vastra, Jenny and Strax are at the end of a case involving identical twins, undetectable poison and an Egyptian curse. As Strax leads the culprit away for obliteration, an inspector from Scotland Yard requests that he be held for questioning instead. Jenny apologises for Strax as "he's new". The inspector thinks Strax is Turkish, but Vastra explains his alien origins to the inspector's astonishment. The inspector also inquires of Vastra's "skin condition" and she explains her Silurian heritage and her initial disgust at "ape" (human) society after being awoken - but changed her thoughts when she fell in love.
