Van Baalen Bros. was a salvage company that operated in open space. Though at one point they were run by a father named van Baalen and his sons, the business was taken over by the sons and was rebranded "Van Baalen Bros.". During this period, the captain of the company vessel was Gregor Van Baalen, who had effectively stolen control of the firm out from his smarter brother — and father's chosen successor — Tricky. Gregor, with his dimmer brother Bram's support, had convinced an amnesiac, partly-bionic Tricky that Tricky was an android and therefore not a Van Baalen brother.

One day, the firm came across the TARDIS and used their illegal magno-grab technology to haul it in as salvage. They then became embroiled in an adventure inside the TARDIS which led to the practical death of the company — until the Eleventh Doctor found a way to avert the timeline in which all three Van Baalen brothers died. In the new timeline, the company's computers briefly registered the presence of the TARDIS flying by before it vanished from their sensors. Additionally, the new timeline appeared to feature a Gregor who recognised Tricky as a brother. (TV: Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS)
