Story notes
- The last time a clown was an enemy was in the Doctor Who episode, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy
- Menacing clowns have also appeared in The Celestial Toymaker and The Deadly Assassin. There were also clowns among the Night Travellers (TW:From Out of the Rain).
- The title 'Day of the Clown' was learned when the Penguin Books website revealed the first two of their Sarah Jane Adventures Series 2 novelisations. The information has since been removed from their website.

Rumours
- It is speculated that Maria will leave in this episode. DWM stated that the brig would return to help Sarah Jane, but not to worry because Luke, Clyde and Rani would still be there. There was no mention of Maria. Maria will only be in The Last Sontaran as Yasmin Paige is in her GCSE year. This was confirmed in DWM 399.
