At the San Diego Comic Con in July 2008, Julie Gardner confirmed that the character of Toshiko Sato really is deceased, leaving it at present unknown whether actress Naoko Mori will appear in Series 3 in some capacity; similarly, it's not yet known whether Burn Gorman, whose character Owen Harper also died in Series 2, will appear in some fashion.

The name of the five part series was revealed in Torchwood Magazine as Children of Earth. This may be a reference to the Children of Time, a concept introduced in Journey's End, an episode that crossed over between Doctor Who and Torchwood.
