"Jerusalem" was a hymn sung at one of Winifred Gillyflower's meetings in 1893 at a church near Sweetville. Gillyflower lead the song, and the entire congregation, excluding Jenny Flint, joined in.

In the real world, although the hymn was written around 1804, Hubert Parry's melody was not actually composed until 1916, 23 years after the story was set.
