Thanks for your recent edits! I'm Jimbo, your robot wiki representative! We hope you'll keep on editing with us. This is actually a great time to have joined, because we're now fully independent, and working on a host of new features!

We've got a couple of important quirks for a fan written wiki, so let's get them out of the way first.

British English, please

We generally use British English 'round these parts, so if you use another form of English, please be sure you set your spell checker to BrEng, and take a gander at our spelling cheat card.

Spoilers aren't cool

We have a strict definition of "spoiler" that you may find a bit unusual. Basically, a spoiler, to us, is anything that comes from a story which has not been released yet. So, even if you've got some info from a BBC press release or official trailer, it basically can't be referenced here. In other words, you gotta wait until the episode has finished its premiere broadcast to start editing about its contents. Please check the spoiler policy for more details.

Other useful stuff

Aside from those two things, we also have some pages that you should probably read when you get a chance, like:

If you're brand new to wiki editing — and we all were, once! —  you probably want to check out these tutorials at Wikipedia, the world's largest wiki:

Remember that you should always sign your comments on talk and vote pages using four tildes like this:

Thanks for becoming a member of the TARDIS crew! If you have any questions, see the Help pages, add a question to one of the Forums or ask an admin.

Novelisation addition

Hi, I removed the novelisation from the classicTV info box, as the novelisation info should really be kept separate from the TV information. --Tangerineduel 14:26, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Doug86

I've been a bit absent recently caught up in life and all that but just having a browsw and two things drew my attention one was brief encounters and the other was the BIT comic strips. As both of these are of interest to me and on my list to look at I thought I might make a few suggestions.

Re Brief encounters

I had a discussion some time ago regarding how to list them. I think it was Tangerineduel, started giving them all an individual article, but after discussion we thought about referencing them to a single page. One of the reasons for this is quiet a few had no title assigned to them and would be difficult to find, and the other was the fact that content was concise, but lacking in available depth to warrant a whole page, without reprinting the text anyway. As their were I think just over 30, it seemed to be quite a short series, containable on one page. Anyway don't know if you found the previous discussion, or if these points had been considered, and if so I'd like to know how you're planning on dealing with the unnamed ones.

Re BIT comic strips

On a similar line, but not quite.
I see you've started to give the strips individual pages. Here' a thought! As the strip is so short (running to only four pages, individually titled but often with a running narrative. Could 'we' (and I only say that because its something I've been looking at with regards Tenth Doctor Comic strips recently), combine the comic strip article in the BIT Issue page (yet to come). It would give the Issue page a bit more interest, strip continuity, and as the strip is limited to the magazine with a definite (so far) partwork issue of 52 be more contained.

Anyway just a few thoughts let me know what you think. The Librarian 15:02, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Just to jump into this conversation, after actually reading through some of the Brief Encounters recently (while working my way through various DWMs), they almost can qualify for a page, and with 30 stories would make for a long single page. As for the untitled ones, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. --Tangerineduel 15:29, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
I agree about giving Brief Encounters stories single pages, and I think I have a solution for the BIT comics. The Comic Book Database has given unofficial titles for the story arcs. If we borrow from them, it would be like this:

Just a suggestion, let me know what you think. Doug86 20:49, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Altering other user's personal pages and postings

Hi, I've not mentioned it thus far. However please do not alter any further person's personal pages/postings, this is against our Vandalism and Unhelpful Content Policy, further actions such as those described may result in action being taken. (But on a side note, you've been doing a great job thus far). Thanks --Tangerineduel 13:07, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Name Confusion Reply

The Oakley/Oakely spellings are taken straight from the official Big Finish pages. So unless someone has the actual cds, I don't have a way to verify which is the actual spelling, or if they're actually two different people with similiar names. --Colleyd 13:35, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Woof.

I'm trying not to put the tag on all of them, if you think some aren't stubs, then just remove the tag. --AnimeNoKyouran 04:49, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Absent Admins

I'm sending this out to all the currently active Admins here, with regards to this Forum posting Forum:Absent Admins.

It's the suggestion that all the admins who have not been active in the last two years have their admin user rights dropped.

This is the list of users to be dropped back from admins.

User:Freethinker1of1 was also on the list, though as he started this wiki I think that would be a bit of a kick in the teeth.

Please put your thoughts on the forum or get back to me with opinions or what we should do etc, thanks. (Also if you think I've missed any active admins can you send this message onwards to them also, I've sent this to User:Azes13, User:Ghelæ, User:GingerM). --Tangerineduel 15:41, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

BIT Comic strips

Hi Doug, noticed you have been doing some editing to the reference boxes on the strips, just so you don't think I'm ignoring you, I'm just finishing off the comic strip pages (only three more to catch up with and complete).I took on board TangerineDuels feedback and have revisited with the information I had so far to bring it up to date and correct a few first time messy bits! Im intending to revist them once more add and specify references to props used. (eg. Blue suit, screwdriver used to open doors, etc). So if you want to hold back. The other thing is glasses! My view is that glasses are something to do on another page, but a page specifically to the Doctor's glasses. In Time Crash, specific references were made to the use of the glasses not sure how to head it yet or whether to keep under general Doctor page.
Thanks by the way for the list of grouped story titles. I decided not to use them in the end, deciding that they weren't well known enough in themselves and so in this case were probably more accessible as individual articles. This could still be changed at a later stage, but we'll see when the series is done and the basic areas of BIT are all covered. Keep up the good work. The Librarian 04:25, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply; my view is that "glasses" is too common for an article on this wikia - note that you didn't add a link for the Doctor's blue suit. However, if you're planning on doing an article on the Doctor's glasses, go right ahead. Doug86 13:49, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Cyberman

Hi there just curious what was the reasoning behind moving Cybus Cybermen to Cybermen (Pete's World) as i was unable to find any dissolution on the move. Dark Lord Xander 08:45, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

It seemed to me to make more sense this way, all the other articles dealing with duplicates in Pete's World have "(Pete's World)" to differentiate them from their main timeline counterparts, so I figured that the Cybermen should too. Doug86 22:36, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Be that as it may i think it should have been discussed while your point is valid they are Cybus Cybermen created by Cybus industries hence the big C on their chests but what ever. I am happy that this outcome atleast returned the original Cybermen to the Cybermen Page --Dark Lord Xander 07:29, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Vulcan (disambiguation)

Why was it deleted?

My understanding is that disambiguation are usually needed for three or more articles with the same or similar names. Since there are only two articles named Vulcan (the planet and the god) all that is needed to have a link to the other article at the top of the page. Doug86 07:15, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

copying from Wikipedia doesn't count as plagiarism

I noticed you deleted an article Honoré Lechasseur for copying and pasting a Wikipedia article of the same name.

Wikipedia has a Creative Commons license, same as this Wiki and even a template for indicating that you took part or all of an article from there. (though I don't know the short form of the template or else I would use it.)

http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Wikipedia

and

I myself "created" the Muriel Frost article by cut and pasting from Wikipedia. (I did the same with at least one other articles.) though I edited and changed it to fit this Wiki.

not that I have any tolerance for people cutting and pasting information from sources not under Creative Commons. I pointed out the number of comics entries stolen from Doctor Who Guide. --Stardizzy2 19:19, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Battles in Time Comic strips. Thoughts wanted

Hi Doug, I've seen you tidy up and work around comic strips and would value your opinion on some recent work. As you may have noticed I've been working on the strips in the Battles in Time magazine. I choose this series mainly because its of a limited run and could create a test-look to it. I'm still tweaking it with additional information to include, but nearly there with that bit. My thoughts are around the use of images.
For starters the info box on the story page - it clearly identifies what the article relates to. I choose to include a gallery bit on the main page, I thought better representation of the strip than a single image. (AND scanning here takes so long, not to mention the upload times). Good or bad move?
The artist Lee Sullivan has chanced across these pages and been in contact. He seems more than happy for his work to be promoted this way and was very flattering about the pages. More coming soon I hope! He said he had forgotten he had drawn some of the images when he saw them displayed as they were, which I thought was nice!Anyway...
On the main listing page underneath the listings I've duplicated the story samples. While I appreciate there is some duplicity, I believe its inclusion is for another reason. So often I find lists of comic strips boring and unhelpful, after all they are a very visual reference and the images of a frame I find are far more helpful if I want to look something up. A comment about the speed in loading the page being compromised by the amount of information (and again the question of duplicity), has been raised. Do you think the page should the page be divided up, and is this degree of duplicity acceptable?
Personally I hate linking to a page that has maybe only one line of text. With the comic strip characters the minor characters have been included in the character section of the strip page, but some have suggested they should have their own page. To remove this bit and give each a seperate article, I feel could be a bit of an unnecessary distraction.
Another option I'm thinking of exploring is imaging each comic strip character so at least each named character at least would have a visual included. And it would feature an individual infobox like Abslom Daak. I'm not aware of one specifically for comic strip characters, any thoughts?
Sorry if this is a bit longwinded but as I'm now revisting each page I thought I would ask what you think (if you have any thoughts on the matter that is!). Keep up the good work by the way! Oh and some P.S.'s

  • I intend to include a generic title for the various installments in the notes and,
  • I'm going to expand the TV referencing bit with specifics. and,
  • Following Time Crash maybe the Doctor's glasses do deserve a page, and having listened to the commentary from David Tenant on the latest boxed set, I believe the tenth Doctors clothing could well have its own page!
  • Oh and finally while I'm thinking about it...any interest, or objection, do you think in uploading the Battles in Time collectable trading cards, full size scans, not on a gallery page but linked from the listing page. i was thinking ahead to a Related Merchandise link on a number of pages!

Well that is it now...bye The Librarian 02:44, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for requesting my opinion on your ideas. They are as follows--
  • Info box on story page - I'd change it to just the BIT logo, not the BIT logo and Tenth Doctor picture that appears now.
  • Duplicating story samples on main page - I personally find this acceptable, although to save space you may want to minimize the images.
  • Comic strip characters - these definitely should be given their own pages: after all, characters from the TV stories and novels have their own pages; plus I myself have created pages for characters from various TVC comic strips.
  • A glasses page has already been created, and I think the Doctor's clothes should be limited to a Gallery page.
  • Battles in Time trading cards and other merchandise should also be limited to just a Gallery page.

Hi Doug RE: Captain Jack Harkness

I'm looking at the Torchwood bits at the moment for a distraction! and i see you are right behind me.
I see you have deleted Captain Jack Harkness (TV story). Hate to disagree but I know its a duplicate I copied it! I was intending to redo the links from the overused Captain Jack page. The distinction is made with other pages that refer to a TV story so I cant see what your hurry was. The Librarian 21:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

First of all, an article's name is not changed by copying and duplicating an old page in a new article, but by Moving the old article. Second, I see no reason why the episode page should be moved when it would simply be easier to fix the pages that incorrectly link to that article. The current set up seems just fine to me. Doug86 23:39, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Ok Im going to assume you know what you are talking about, but firstly unless I check with your talk page, I'd never know you replied!
Surely the whole point of ambiguous links is to clarify them. Someone searching for Captain Jack Harkness (who never refers to himself as just Jack Harkness! not that I've found yet) in the same way I would have thought would have an article headed like the Brigadier is used as a known prefix. Further it would make the distinction between the (at least) two Jack Harkness'.
Bearing in mind that this primarily a Doctor Who wiki, is it not sensible to suppose that searches for Captain Jack Harkness would more likely lead to a character search rather than the name of a TV story/Torchwood story!
I dont agree with you that the current set up is fine sorry! The Librarian 15:26, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Well I would assume that anyone familiar with wikis would know that character articles never begin with titles, but with second names. Further, if a person did search for Captain Jack Harkness the character and came to the episode page instead, they would simply realize they had made a mistake and go to the correct page. Both pages link to the main disambiguation page, which as the name suggests is there to clarify ambiguous links. Doug86 23:42, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

According to Tardis:Manual of style#Series and episode names, story titles should be in "quotation marks", not italics. Please do not vandalise pages by removing properly placed quotation marks and replacing them with italics.

Deletion of Hartnell episode name redirects unwarranted

I see you deleted my redirect from "Bell of Doom". I have re-created that redirect, in the hopes you will not delete it again. It is important to maintain these episode title redirects, and indeed it is inconsistent to allow some (like "The Dead Planet"), while disallowing this one. "Bell of Doom" is important to maintain, in particular, because it has a number of unique features that are not part of The Massacre as a whole. For instance, it is only true to say that the setting of "Bell" —and not the serial as a whole —includes then-modern London. It is also the only episode for which Donald Tosh receives a writing credit. Without being able to link to this particular episode, it is more difficult to precisely define Tosh's actual on-screen credit. In my opinion, all Hartnell episodes should be uniformly linkable by their individual titles so that discussion on related pages can be easily and specifically referenced. Editing Posts

Hi Doug, love the work you've been doing on the wiki. I just wondered, when you edit a post, for instance Dalek, could you edit everything you want and then save it, instead of editing one section and saving it, then doing it to the next. It's just I watch several of the pages you edit, and it would mean less emails in my inbox if you edited the whole thing and saved it. I know it seems like a stupid thing to comment about, but when it happens two nights in a row... Thanks for your cooperation. Will101 21:29, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

See the discussion over on the Tardis talk:Infobox development the changes made to the Template: Infobox Individual have been discussed and are part of making the infoboxes work far better. Page deletion

Hi Doug -- does this wiki have a policy or process for deleting pages? I didn't see one on a quick look through your policy pages.

I've gotten an email request from Claudia Dudman to have her stub page removed, as she's a private person who would prefer not to appear in the wiki. Would you please do this for her, in accord with our general policy about pages about living people? Thank you very kindly, — Catherine<staff/> (talk) 22:03, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Doug, could you please explain why you restored this page, deleted as a courtesy to someone who contacted us about it politely? I tried to contact you about it first, but didn't get a response. Can you please tell me how you would like me to handle this? Thanks! — Catherine<staff/> (talk) 19:53, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm just going to butt in where I'm not wanted. I've read and understand the policy you cite, Catherine, but I'd like invite Ms. Dudman, or you on her behalf, to share why this article violates her right to privacy. It simply lists a credit that is also published in a magazine. It does not contain any information that is not already publicly available, and is certainly less than a Google search would likely reveal about her (or anyone else). I think a review of any similar articles on this wiki would show that they are consistent in only concerning themselves with only the professional aspects of such persons.
Of course, if Ms. Dudman is adamant, I concur that the policy is clear-cut. But I'd rather she join the community of this wiki, which I've found to be extremely respectful and professional. (Heck, if they tolerate me...)
I know it probably goes without saying, but I'm not attempting to speak for Doug86 or anyone but myself. Monkey with a Gun 07:20, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for the thoughtful response, Monkey. I agree that you've done nothing wrong by creating the article, and that the information that she did this work is verifiable public knowledge. This was less a policy decision than a courtesy, in the spirit of not going against an article subject's wishes. She has moved on from her work with Doctor Who, and does not wish this very small credit from her resume to appear in search results for her name. If the article had been more substantial I would certainly have encouraged her to engage the community in dialogue about it, but in regard to a one-sentence stub I didn't feel asking her to "argue her case" was the best or kindest choice, when she was very clear about her wishes. I apologize if I made a poor judgment call.
How should we proceed? — Catherine<staff/> (talk) 14:51, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

DWAS

Hi! was wondering if you could restore Doctor Who Appreciation Society (DWAS) in favour of Doctor Who Appreciation Society? Simply because I've changed the references and didn't want to link a DWAS page. I was sorting it when you 'interupted'. Rather than redirect just delete the other. Thanks The Librarian 01:27, September 6, 2009 (UTC)

Actually I'm pretty sure that the name of the organization is "Doctor Who Appreciation Society", and not "Doctor Who Appreciation Society (DWAS)", as DWAS is just their initials. Doug86 01:32, September 6, 2009 (UTC)
Ok, but the article heading if you want to be pedantic doesnt state that this is a page headed by the organisation name only does it. Not only that but people of a 'certain age' will know the name DWAS (without dots denoting an abbreviation!. Furthermore DWAS was used in the title of a number of fanproduced items that were published on closer inspection by the Doctor Who Appreciation Society.

I just thought that as people have both terms of reference for the same thing it would be easier....obviously not as you disagree and have changed it all back. So can I ask you do a DWAS page with a redirect to Doctor Who Appreciation Society. So that both versions can be linked, a third if you want to have D.W.A.S. The Librarian 21:35, September 6, 2009 (UTC)

PS Germ Warfare...sorted! thanks for that one, ill replace the black and white (DWA CS7) picture at some stage. The Librarian 21:35, September 6, 2009 (UTC)

A plea from the Librarian

I really appreciate all the help in tidying up my pages, especially the categories bits which Im crap at to be honest - I know if I used them more I'd get better! But could you just hold off (even for a half hour) between changes because I usually do pages in blocks and frequently swop between them tidying up (some of it anyway), as I go and Im getting quite a few conflicts in editing. Thanks. Oh by the way, I am curious where in the world you are working from! The Librarian 23:53, September 6, 2009 (UTC)

Redirect vs Deletion

Me again! Hi! would you explain to me why you choose to redirect and not delete pages. (A specific example being Allhallows Street). The reason I ask is that by adding a redirect it doesn't appear to remove it from the list of orphaned pages AND I think it makes the 'new' page look clumsy with "this page is redirected". The Librarian 01:08, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

If an article is found to have been misspelled, the proper way to deal with it is to move it to the proper article name, not to create a new page with the same content and delete the old page. This way the page's history is preserved. Doug86 01:58, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

First Doctor Vortis Timeline

I noticed you recently edited the continuity sections of the Vortis based First doctor stories to add On the Web Planet into the mix. The order you placed them in though, doesn't seem to make sense with the order that the stories from the 1966 annual seem to present. Since there isn't a summary for On the Web Planet, I created a forum post at The First Doctor's visits to Vortis to see if anyone has information that could help figure out the proper placement for all these stories. I was hoping you could explain how you came to the order you used. Thanks! --Raukodraug 02:42, September 16, 2009 (UTC)

Shaila Bux article

I just happened to, at random, come across the Shaila Bux article. I noticed the article lists a date of death, however this is not sourced and was originally added by an unregistered IP user (I'm mentioning this because you edited the addition for format). I did a Google and I couldn't find anything to support this, and in fact it even looks like she has an active Facebook page. Were you able to confirm at your end that she is in fact dead, or were you simply editing for format (I know I'm asking you to think back about 18 months). If not, I might be inclined to remove this as uncertain information. 23skidoo 02:25, September 29, 2009 (UTC)

I was just about to contact you regarding Claudia Dudman being removed from links - is there something Im missing?, when I saw this bit about Shaila Bux. Curious. If she is supposed to have died, why is she still choosing favourite moments from Doctor Who and Doctor Who Magazine. I hope to be contacting DWA shortly to raise a couple of questions that have been knawing away slowly and thought these comments were not a good advert for the site if the information is incorrect. Please clarify for me. Thanks The Librarian 20:28, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

Evening Doug,

Hope you are well - just wondered why you undid my revision of Judson - all based on the facts in the story, the original is also very badly written and in need of a rewrite. Just thought Id ask why?

Paul

You frequently use & n b s p ; instead of spaces and for hyperlinks the format [http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Haemovore Haemovores], both of which are completely unnecessary. Doug86 00:05, November 3, 2009 (UTC)

Alternative Doctors

Why did you change the alternative doctors page. The Exile doctors are 2nd and 3rd and the curse of fatal death are alternative 9-13. Why not change Shalka Doctor

Judson 2

Doug, thank you for your earlier response, however, a couple of points.

Firstly, Im not sure why you felt the need to post a reply that was bordering on rude. A simple explanation, rather than a lecture would have been more appropriate. Secondly, with regards to your decision to delete the whole article, why not send me a message pointing out the problem/s and asking me to correct, which I would have done?

As a resolution, what I suggest is that you restore the previous Judson post and Ill go back and correct from there. A tip also for the future, the language you use, while I understand it, is rather complex for the casual viewer, it might be worth keeping it simply for people who are not familar with the letter of web language.

Thanks

Paul

2032

Just a quick note that I reinstated the 2032 article, but I properly formatted it to conform with the other Years articles (i.e. 2089, 2059, 2009). Once we have indication of a calendar date, a year article becomes justified, though the previous attempt was not formatted properly. 23skidoo 18:31, November 21, 2009 (UTC)

Vinnie van Gogh

I was in the process of writing up an article on him, and created that redirect because it was simpler to see what was linking to the article. I've recreated the redirect because putting in a capital "Van" is a very common misspelling of his name, and it is almost guaranteed that people will link to that again. Without it, chances are very good that someone will create a new version of the article and we'll end up with it duplicated. -- sulfur 04:39, December 31, 2009 (UTC)

Amy (Key 2 Time)

I see you're dissatisfied with my move of Amy to Amy (Key 2 Time), and Amy to Amy (disambiguation). The change was completed, along with all the manual editing of various linked pages, before your complaint was registered. I wouldn't have thought it would have been a controversial move at all. The average user of the site will undoubtedly think "Amy" means "Amy Pond", given her upcoming prominence in the Doctor Who mythos. Even were she not, "Amy" is such a common name that, I believe, common sense dictates that Amy should be linked to Amy (disambiguation). This minor character from a trilogy of audio adventures is simply not important enough to justify giving her "ownership" of the common name "Amy". If anyone deserves that — and I don't actually think they do — surely it's the more prominent Amy Pond.

Precedence for this kind of move can be seen with Martha and Rose. CzechOut | 16:28, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

Timeline navigation changes

As you are one of the frequent editors to year, decade and century pages, I wanted to try to make your life easier. Koschei got the ball rolling on navigation improvements with his new template, but this will be extremely laborious to implement. Hundreds of pages requiring minute changes also spells the possibility of manual error creeping in. So I'm updating his template into an entirely automated one. As you can see by examining the code at Template:Timeline test, and its dependent subtemps, all that needs to happen is to add {{timeline}} at to the page. The temp will take care of the rest, automatically sensing whether it's on a year, century or decade page, and responding with appropriate output. The bells and whistles of template design aren't yet completed, but that's easily fixed after the hard coding is done. Appropriate categories will also be automatically placed on the page as well.

Best of all, you don't have to do a thing. The template will be placed on every page by a bot. (Ultimately the old HTML table navigation will be removed by a bot too, but that's about a week away yet.) So instead of spending so much time on mind-numbing work, feel free to get back to the greater fun of whatever more enjoyable work you were doing here. Implementation of the core skeleton will happen over the next few days, with the project complete by sometime before the end of April. CzechOut | 03:17, March 31, 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Mark Vincent

There was no need to delete Mark Vincent just because it had been started in a skimpy way. I left a detailed note on the IP user's talk page about how to improve it, and he should have been given the opportunity to do so. Mark Vincent is an important figure in the production of BBC Wales DW, and he does need an article here. CzechOut | 14:24, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

My apologies. I'm quite wrong to have doubted you. The proper name is Mick Vincent, isn't it? I'm afraid I'll even have to take some credit for the waste of your time deleting that article, because the user who created it was, I think, going off edits I'd made. They're all fixed now, though. Please note that the automated process of changing over to the new timeline template has now begun. During this period, which may last up to a week, please do not add any templates or html to timeline pages. Please see Forum:For people working on year/decade/century pages . . . for more details. A note will be placed there once the process is complete. CzechOut | 21:11, April 22, 2010 (UTC)

Behind-the-scenes people

You may find it helpful/quicker when creating new pages about behind-the-scenes people to hit the "actor" preloadable format button. I've updated it to automatically start with the PAGENAME, so you don't have to type it; to include the imdb name template in such a way that you only have to enter the ID number; and to automatically include a DEFAULTSORT so that you only have to type in their last name and first initial to properly alphabetize them.

Also, I have begun the process of further subdividing the DW/TW/SJA crew cats so that we can organize people more usefully than just "Doctor Who crew". You may wish to periodically visit Category:Doctor Who crew so as to find out which categories have been created and organize new additions appropriately. For example, there are now cats for art department, visual effects, props department, sound department, DPs, PMs, and others. CzechOut | 12:34, May 2, 2010 (UTC)

Term Paper on Eve Myles

Hello!

I'm a BA student of English and American studies and I'd be glad if you could help me concerning a question about Eve Myles.

For one of my seminars I'm writing a term paper about Myles' dialect. I need to know if she speaks English and Welsh and if she does if she grow up bilingual or not.

I searched on the internet and came up empty handed.

Inconvenience of the deletion of Temporal Anomaly

Tangerineduel, Revanvolatrelundar and I are all annoyed at the deletion of the Temporal Anomaly page I created. If it was because the page wasn't sourced then you could have sourced it rather than deleted it because I don't know how/I don't know what it means. If you could recreate the page yourself and source it, that would be great as it would stop the massive incovenience to Tangerineduel, Revanvolatrelundar and myself. Disambig template

Hey, I've noticed you've reverted some of the bot's moves of the disambig template to a consistent place at the top of the page. Since this was a preparatory move towards the general changeover that's being developed at w:c:tardistest (see, for instance, w:c:tardistest:Peter) I'm a little curious if you have a strong objection to the disambig being consistently at the top of the page. I think it should be at the top of the page, because we'd want to alert people that the page is of the disambig "class" of pages. If you have other views, I'd love to hear them. It'd be better to discuss them now, before they get hard-coded into the CSS. Thanks :)

Years

I have to disagree, I think that if a year, date etc has a recorded event, then it goes on page for that date/year. It also cuts down on the number of redirects, makes these century pages easier to read as they don't look like just one big paragraph. Granted, I created pages for years that have no events, these if it's a compromise can be deleted and exist as redirects to their century page. I feel strongly, very strongly if fact that if a year has a recorded event, that goes on the year's page and not the century page. Can I also say thank you, for not deleted or reverting my editing, and waiting for a decision to be made. Thanks. Mini-mitch\talk 15:37, April 28, 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation policy

I would suggest you read the Disambiguation policy. It states that when story titles have the same name, they are both Disambiguated. I.e. The Lodger (TV story) and Comic story, so The End of the World goes the same way. Mini-mitch\talk 16:06, June 9, 2011 (UTC)

Dates?

Just wondering what motivated the mass-delete. As far as I can tell none of the pages had a delete tag or a merge tag alerting anyone (wanting to object or discuss the merging). Surely individual articles are far better than mass-redirecting all of them to one article? Then there's all the histories of the pages to consider. Then there's the issue of preserving the history of all the consolidated pages, which hasn't been done. --Tangerineduel / talk 15:18, June 30, 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I should've made a note as to why I'm doing this. I'm just undoing the changes made by Mini-mitch when he split the article into separate pages. As I said to him when he first did this, since most of the years in this century would have little or no information, it would be easier to have all the years on one page, just like the centuries prior to the 15th are all on one page (Early human history). Doug86 15:22, June 30, 2011 (UTC)
I understand that, somewhat.
But I think we need to work out where our threshold of information lies between having it all on one century page and having individual articles. I've started a forum topic Forum:Years - Separate pages or Century pages so we can get this sorted out and discussed so we don't need to go through these process again in the future. Thanks. --Tangerineduel / talk

Monobook

I'm sorry, Doug, I've got to advise that you stick to Wikia for a bit. There's a huge caching delay for Monobook. I cannot quickly do anything. Monobook is simply under construction for the next few days.
czechout<staff />   06:46: Tue 20 Sep 2011

I've put in the command to return to normal sentence case, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a speedy return. The command to go to lowercase was put in well over two hours ago. If you really insist on sticking to Monobook, the only advice I can give is that you periodically refresh your cache. I apoligise for the inconvenience, but it's just not being very responsive today.
czechout<staff />   06:55: Tue 20 Sep 2011
Ah. I see what happened. You made a fairly massive change in common, then changed it back. Common is a very weird beast. In one sense, you want a lot of your code there because it means you only have to maintain one file. Problem is that it's very sluggish. You get much snappier response times out of putting stuff for monobok in monobook and stuff for wikia in wikia. That's why I've been tearing it apart recently. We're just gonna have to wait for your initial change to filter through, and then for the "undo" to hit.
czechout<staff />   07:10: Tue 20 Sep 2011
I would consider switching over to wikia IF it had the toolbox on the side like monobook does - there isn't even a "what links here" link I can click on. Additionally, wikia has much smaller margins than monobook, which I don't care for either. Doug86 10:33, September 20, 2011 (UTC)
OK I just found that link, but I still find it less convenient than the monobook layout. Doug86 10:49, September 20, 2011 (UTC)

First, most of these are not stubs, as a lot of these have all the currently known information about it. Secondly, the correct way to tag a page as a stub is by adding {{stub}}, not [[Category:Stub]]. Doug86 23:57, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

Mass destruction of job title redirects

Hi :) Why are you mass-destroying redirects of job titles? Both the capitalised and non capitalised versions have their uses. Redirects do no harm, even if apparently unlinked. In standard English, there are situations where it's appropriate to capitalise a job title and other times where it's not. Having both capitalised and un-capitalised forms makes it easier to write sentence which are grammatically correct. I left a message behind on most, if not all, of those redirect creations, indicating that there was thought behind creating and/or keeping them. You failed to give any kind of deletion rationale, so I've no clue why you're deleting them.
czechout<staff />   16:13: Sat 01 Oct 2011

I deleted them because they were no longer being used after I made the changes to the Wales crew template. Doug86 talk to me 19:00, October 1, 2011 (UTC)
I'm not really understanding how your changing of a template obviates the need for both the capitalised and non-capitalised versions of a title. By changing the template, you haven't changed a basic rule of English grammar. Sometimes, you cap titles and sometimes you don't, as this style guide makes clear. We need both forms to avoid unnecessary pipe tricks.
czechout<staff />   05:08: Mon 17 Oct 2011
p.s. Sorry for taking so long to respond, but I didn't realise you had replied here. It's just a suggestion, but you might want to put a message at the top of your talk page indicating that it's your standard practice to respond on your own page. Sulfur does this, since it's non-standard talk page behaviour. Nothin' wrong with it, of course — it's just not how it's normally done, because it doesn't trip the new message alert. I thought you were just ignoring me, and other users might as well.

NA Preludes

I see you've been editing references to NA preludes in DWM by inserting a colon. I haven't actually run across one yet that actually has a colon. Prelude Birthright, for instance, is written exactly like that, with no colon, and no difference in typography between the Prelude and the Birthright. I don't feel strongly one way or the other on whether we might want to insert a colon, since a colon feels almost necessary. Still, factually, there is no colon. Do with that information what you will.  :)

Cyber-Mole

Well, this is how you do it. But it's tedious and not worth the time in this case. You're talking about something that happened about four years ago, in February of 2008. And the revision that user:Steed papered over was nothing more than a skeleton. Literally, there's no text aside from the infobox and the section headers.

This would be a good case to practice selective deletion on, but since we're not talking about the preservation of any significant history, it's hardly necessary. The far easier solution is simply to make an insignificant edit to Cyber-Mole (comic story) and leave behind an edit summary that was comprised of a URL to the last revision of Cyber-Mole that had to do with the story. In other words, leaving a bread crumb back to the earlier history is completely sufficient to any licensing requirements, and is clear enough to any reader trying to follow the trail.

Riftan 5

Hey :) Cache is being wonky. It's not even showing that the file has been deleted, and is in fact missing several deletions of the bot's from earlier today, including this one. We have to hope that the history will rectify itself at today's regular cleaning.

You can, however, try a direct link to the restore page at:

http://tardis.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Undelete&target=Riftan%205

I'd kinda prefer that you not restore the page, because its basis is, by the creator's admission, Wikipedia. If you restore it, you technically have to put up a {{wikipedia}} tag on it. It'd be easier to simply start a whole new page, completely divorced from the earlier history.
czechout<staff />   02:33: Fri 11 Nov 2011

Since we've had no change on Riftan 5's error message, and since the deletion logs for user:CzechBot are still incomplete, I've bumped this issue up to Wikia Staff. We're in genuine bug territory here, and only Wikia can clear it. Thanks for noticing this flaw and pointing it out quickly.
czechout<staff />   01:34: Sat 12 Nov 2011
Just to keep you abreast of things, I've got a note back from Wikia saying that this issue was indeed a genuine bug, and that they should have fixed it by now. Certainly, it's not appearing on Riftan 5 anymore, but they should have fixed the problem from recurring after any deletion, Wikia-wide.

I'm noticing more and more instances of people uploading pictures which are, according to agreed practises, flawed in some way. Or if you have something from The Mind of Evil, please ensure it gets into Category:The Mind of Evil TV story images.

These images by story categories are, of course, in addition to any other categories which may be appropriate, such as ones from Images by character, Images by object, or images by species.

Images by story will continue to grow over the coming weeks to include other media, but comics and TV were deemed the highest priority, since the vast majority of images will come from these two visual media.

Also, if you haven't noticed it for now, TV story pages now all have a little tab at the top left labelled "images". Clicking it takes you to the relevant category, so that you can quickly view our repository of images from that particular story All stories will eventually have this sort of link. Longer term, individual charactes might also have such a link.

You may/dab page

Hey Doug :) I see you've taken to moving {{you may}} up above the top of page templates, as at Castrovalva (TV story). I need to ask you to suspend this practice immediately.

You're probably unaware that monobook styling on {{you may}} and {{dab page}} — as well as many other elementsw — is different than it is in wikia. While you can move {{you may}} above the {{real world}} template, and it still looks basically okay in monobook, you cannot do this in wikia. The template has been specifically designed in wikia to sit to the immediate left of an infobox, and therefore has a width of about 480px in wikia.

I quite appreciate that this is nonsensical if you're a Wikipedia editor, because wikipedia commonly puts the dab note above the infobox. But Wikipedia doesn't have top of page banners, which act as the visual "top" of the page. And Wikipedia, luckily for them, doesn't have to contend with the design problem of having to support such a radically different skin as the fixed-width Wikia.

Since monobook expands the wider you set your browser, these templates no longer have borders in monobook.

I understand the benefits of editing in Monobook, but please remember to check how your change will look in Wikia, since that is the primary skin of the wiki, and the only skin available to guests — who are by far the majority users of the site.

(As you probably know, you can check a page in wikia without leaving monobook by simply adding ?useskin=wikia to the end of the url. So, http://tardis.wikia.com/User talk:Doug 86?useskin=wikia will show you this page in wikia.)

Actually, there's an even easier solution to this. Check out Forum:Monobook users: please install this code for instructions on how to easily install a button that'll let you click to Oasis without leaving Monobook. I think you'll really dig it.

This code has been updated. The latest version is at Forum:Easy switching between monobook, wikia and wikiamobile. As the thread title implies, you now can switch to wikiamobile as well, to check how our pages look on Android/iOS and other handheld devices.

Talk page redirects

Please stop deleting redirects from the un-dab-ed form of story talk pages (e.g. Talk:Children of Earth: Day Four). The move to automatically disambiguated story names was done on the condition that the un-disambiguated story names would stay in place, where possible. Deleting the simpler form of the talk page name is inherently a violation of this agreement. Thanks. :)

Timelines

I'm sort of confused. Forum:Time clearly states that "Indeed, all timeline pages which used to exist on the wiki have been deleted in an effort to remake them without the use of the Doctor Who Reference Guide, which isn't considered a valid source by this wiki", and yet you've moved over timeline pages clearly based on DWRG, and not deleted at all. -- Tybort (talk page) 08:08, May 3, 2012 (UTC)

Forum:Time

Hey, Doug :) I don't think you've quite grasped the point of Forum:Time. The idea is to write entirely new timelines, not merely move the ones that we had before. Please read not only the introductory section of Forum:Time, but also Forum:Timeline pages, which concludes with an order by Tangerineduel to destroy the existing timelines and start from scratch. Please do not restore the timelines, once deleted.

Forum:Timeline - The Master

Forum:Timeline - The Master has been deleted despite being made from scratch. Will you restore it? OS25 (talk to me, baby.) 15:45, May 3, 2012 (UTC)

From The Archive Police

Hi, there! Just saying, since this is the 108th message and all, that 108 is a lot. I think it's time for you to clear out your talk page and make an archive of it, don't you? Many thanks, 94.6.207.176talk to me 14:22, May 5, 2012 (UTC), An Archive Policeman
