Mrs Hutchings was the owner of a guest house, called Bide-a-Wee, in Keelmouth in 1933. At the time of the First Doctor's visit, she had been a widow for ten years.
Mrs Hutchings was romantically interested in the Doctor. She thought he might be a widower.
When Jeff Atkins and his Pakistani wife, Ujwala, arrived at the guest house with their son Craig, Mrs Hutchings worried at her other guests' reactions. She appreciated that the Doctor was not offended by their presence.
Like her guests, Mrs Hutchings was unaware that it was actually 1999, and that an alien posing as a guest, Mr Prentice, had placed the guest house in a kind of stasis so it would always be 1933 in Keelmouth. After the Doctor and Prentice set things to right, Mrs Hutchings was shocked and disappointed when the Doctor asked for his bill. (PROSE: Bide-a-Wee)
In an alternate timeline where Polly Wright was manipulated into interfering with temporal nexus points, Polly stayed at Mrs Hutchings' guest house. (PROSE: That Time I Nearly Destroyed the World Whilst Looking for a Dress)
