On 19 January, the following important behind-the-scenes events were known to have occurred:
- 2009 - Concurrent with the start of production of TV: Planet of the Dead were rumours that Michelle Ryan and Lee Evans had been cast in the special. The rumours were later confirmed by the BBC, which released publicity photographs of Ryan with David Tennant.
- 2010 - Reports surfaced in US media that BBC Worldwide, Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter were planning to mount a US version of Torchwood for the American Fox network. John Barrowman was a potential star, reprising Jack Harkness, but at this point it was not known if the show would be a standalone remake or part of the established Whoniverse. According to The Hollywood Reporter a US-based "reboot" of Doctor Who was a possibility as well.
