Jackie Lane played Dodo Chaplet, one of the First Doctor's companions, from the conclusion of The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve to The War Machines. She played the part from February to July 1966 alongside William Hartnell as the Doctor.

Lane went on to become a theatrical agent, representing Tom Baker, who would play the Fourth Doctor in 1974, and Janet Fielding, who would play companion Tegan Jovanka in 1981 and herself later become a theatrical agent.

According to The Handbook: The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to the Production of Doctor Who, Lane was a candidate for the role of Susan Foreman in 1963. Although she attended an interview, she was never actually offered the part; she withdrew herself from consideration when she discovered a year-long contract was involved.

Lane is the last surviving companion actor of the classic series who has not recorded a role for Big Finish Productions, although Dodo has been represented in several Companion Chronicles stories. On 22nd November 2013 Lane made a rare television appearance, passing along anniversary greetings during Doctor Who Live: The Afterparty.

Lane is depicted in the 2013 docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time by Sophie Holt in one scene recreating the press photocall announcing Lane's casting in the series.
