Charlotte Abigail Lux, also known as CAL, was a Human who became a Node.

Biography

Charlotte was the youngest daughter of Strackman Lux's grandfather. Felman Lux built his dying daughter The Library and its hard drive to contain and embody her living mind, and a Doctor Moon to maintain The Library and her spiritual wellbeing (the latter task though its personification in "Dr. Moon".) The libary contained all of human history within it which was perfect to keep Charlotte entertained has she loved books more than anything and father gave her them all. Felman Lux also made sure that nobody outside of his family knew of the main comand node's (Charlotte) true nature has he wished for her to live in peace and not be treated like some kind of freak show.

When the Vashda narada began to hatch CAL became quickly awahare of the problem and tried to warn the people of the libary of the threat; a warning that was only partially sucsessful before the Vasda Nerada devoured the head libraian. She then attempted to evacuate the people herself through the teleporters but because virtualy everywhare in the libary was now infested with Vashda Nerada and Quarintine was infect the situation seamed hopeless. So instead of saving then CAL "Saved" the 4,000 and more people on to her system and the other nodes putting them in a dream world to keep there minds ocupied untill rescue came. She then put herself in to sleep mode because of the stress of having so many minds in her own mind. She then forgot her true nature but was watched over by the Doctor Moon that continued to function despite the disaster.

In her perpetual dream, she described to Dr. Moon a world that she sees when she closes her eyes; a world that is later shown to be the Library, where she encountered the Doctor and Donna, they came across a levitating wood sphere, which, with a security camera, acted as her means of communicating with them. In the dream world, she could contact the Doctor through her television screen, where they engaged in a brief conversation which was ended when the technology malfunctioned.

Charlotte after her mind had been contained by the data core

Shortly after this encounter with the Doctor, Dr. Moon came to have a talk with the girl alone and shocked her by telling her that the people inside "her" Library were very real, and that they needed her help. She then "saved" Donna Noble, uploading her to her hard drive and turned her into a Node with her mind free to experience a dream life similar to that which she lived herself. She also did the same with those members of River Song's crew who were killed by the Vashta Nerada. The Doctor and River Song realised that what happened to Donna also happened to the more than 4,000 humans who were "saved" by CAL in order to protect them from the initial Vashda Nerada attack a century earlier. River Song sacrifices herself to allow these people to be "downloaded", and the Doctor later stabilizes CAL's systems. In return, CAL provides a final home for the consciousnesses of River Song and her crew. (DW: Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead)
