A spear was a primitive weapon, usually made from a wooden shaft and a metal head. It could be used in melee combat to stab an opponent, or from range by throwing.

The spear was a weapon favoured by humans prior to the introduction of gunpowder. The Tribe of Gum in 100,000 BC used spears and threw them at the TARDIS. (TV: "The Firemaker") Irongron's men also used spears. (TV: The Time Warrior) Zaroff murdered Ramo with a spear. The guards of Atlantis also used spears. (TV: The Underwater Menace) Spears were also useful practically. Gilgamesh hunted with a spear. (PROSE: Timewyrm: Genesys) In the 11th century, Udilf's people made spears to fight U'thai's warriors. (PROSE: The Immortals)

Other species also used spears. After the Doomsday Weapon eroded their highly-evolved culture, the primitive Uxarieans resorted to using spears. (TV: Colony in Space)
