Joan Redfern was a science teacher at Hulton Academy for Boys, near Farringham in Norfolk. She was widowed, since her husband Arthur Redfern had died in the war. She gave her cat Wolsey to Bernice Summerfield following her encounter with the Doctor. (NA: Human Nature)
