The Cast consist of the return of Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith as well as Tommy Knight as Luke Smith, Daniel Anthony as Clyde Langer and Yasmin Paige as Maria Jackson who leaves on the first episode and introduced Anjli Mohindra as Rani Chandra. The Brigadier returns the first time since 1989 for Battlefield. The Bane return with the last appearance being the first Sarah Jane Adventures episode, Invasion of the Bane. UNIT appear being the first for the spin off as well as having a special Red Nose Day Special episode which is the fist spin off to have a red nose day special.

Novelisations
To date, two stories have been adapted as novelisations by Penguin Character Books, both published in November 2008. It has not yet been announced whether any other Series 2 episodes will be adapted, although a Series 3 story has been novelised.
