Basil Rathbone was an actor who lived during the 20th century. A hound reminded Winston Churchill of something from one of his films. (AUDIO: Hounded) The Tenth Doctor claimed to have been taught fencing alongside Errol Flynn by Rathbone. (AUDIO: The Sword of the Chevalier)
Behind the scenes
The film referenced in Hounded is the 1939 version of The Hound of the Baskervilles in which he played Sherlock Holmes.
In the real world, his image was used to depicted Sherlock Holmes on the cover of the Virgin New Adventures novel All-Consuming Fire.
The regenerated Master's appearance from PROSE: First Frontier is based on Basil Rathbone in The Adventures of Robin Hood, according to author David A. McIntee (DWM 222).
