Barnstaple was a riverside town in the south-west of England.
Nearby towns included Ilfracombe to the north-west and Bideford to the south-west. Local small towns and villages included Marwood to the north-west, Bratton Fleming to the north-east, Brayford to the east and Landkey to the south-east. Link roads running by Barnstaple included the A361, the A377 and the A39. The river on which Barnstaple was built flowed out into Barnstaple or Bideford Bay to the west of the town.
