1997 was a year in which a number of events important to the production of Doctor Who and its spin-offs occurred.

  • December - After trying several "test balloon" services, the BBC officially launched BBC Online (also known as BBCi) at bbc.co.uk. This became the network's main online portal. In November of the following year, a Doctor Who section of the site would be launched, which has since featured not only promotions and archival features relating to both the "classic" and BBC Wales series, but also original content such as webcasts and online fiction.
