Profile

Early Life

Amy was born in Scotland. She was later orphaned and moved to England with her aunt.

Meeting the Doctor

Amelia first met the Doctor when she was seven. He crash landed in her backyard and accompanied her into the house. She made him a great deal of food in order to assuage his cravings, but he hated everything except custard-dipped fish fingers. Amy was avoiding a crack in her room that she heard voices from. The Doctor went up with her and opened the crack. Behind it was an Atraxi, who was looking for the escaped Prisoner Zero.

The Cloister Bell rang and the Doctor ran back to the TARDIS, promising to just make a five minute jump to the future and pick Amy up. She waited for him, but he did not return. Over the next twelve years, Amy became obsessed with her "imaginary friend"; she made dolls and drawings of him and went through four psychiatrists, who all tried to convince her there was no Doctor.

The Doctor returned twelve years later. Amelia, now a kissogram dressed as a police officer going by the name Amy, hit him with a cricket bat as he attempted to enter her home. She handcuffed him to a radiator. The Doctor showed her a room in her house she had never seen. She entered it to find his sonic screwdriver. She encountered Prisoner Zero.

Amy and her boyfriend Rory Williams helped the Doctor defeat Prisoner Zero and the Atraxi. The Doctor then vanished for a short trip to the moon, which actually lasted two more years. He came back for Amy, who joined him as his new companion on the day before her wedding. (DW: The Eleventh Hour)

Behind the Scenes

  • Details about Amy's character and background have yet to be revealed. Photographs published in the media during filming of the character's first episode show her wearing some form of police uniform (whether this is an actual police uniform or a costume is unknown).[1] The first official preview of Series 5 issued by the BBC shows Amy chasing after the Doctor wearing the police uniform described above. There is also a quick shot that shows Amy kissing the Doctor. The Sun newspaper reported that Amy will be a kissogram, and that the police uniform is a costume as part of that job. [2]
  • Amy is the second consecutive TV companion to have red hair. This fact was noted by the BBC when it issued a statement in response to the so-called 'Ginger controversy' that erupted in early January 2010 due to misinterpretation of a statement made by the Eleventh Doctor after his regeneration.[3]
  • Amy Pond is the second character with an aquatic-sounding name to be created by showrunner Steven Moffat following River Song.
  • Recent press reviews of "The Eleventh Hour" have revealed that Amy is an orphan [4] and that she has a crush on the Doctor [5] .
  • A recently released clip from The Eleventh Hour shows the Doctor's first meeting with Amy in the 1990s, when she is a eight-year-old girl (played by Caitlin Blackwood). The TARDIS crashes outside her house, and the Doctor says he will need to make a "five-minute jump into the future" in order to fix it. Amy asks if she can come, too, but he tells her to wait, saying that she can come along when he returns in five minutes. Presumably, he winds up in 2010 instead, meeting Amy as an adult.
  • On 18th March 2010, Gillan confirmed at the Series 5 press launch that she had auditioned with both an English and Scottish accent, and that the latter was ultimately chosen by head writer Steven Moffat.[4] Amy thus became the second televised companion with a Scottish accent, and only the third regularly-appearing Scots character in series history, behind both Jamie McCrimmon and the Brigadier. Since neither Frazer Hines nor Nicholas Courtney are themselves Scottish, Gillan is the first Scottish actor to play a recurring Scot in the history of the programme.
  • In an interview by IGN on March 22, 2010, Karen Gillan revealed some more details about Amy Pond's personality, saying that she is not "in awe of the Doctor", and implying that she differs from previous companions in this respect. She also mentioned that Steven Moffat has set Amy's character on an equal level of importance with the Doctor, with Amy "saving the day" on a number of occasions. [6]
