Hutchinson was an arrogant and mean-spirited school bully in 1913 and best friend of Jeremy Baines. He frequently tormented Tim Latimer and forced the younger student to do his homework for him. He made racist remarks to Martha Jones, who was working as a maid at his school. He was particularly quick to call Tim a coward during military drills (TV: Human Nature) and the real-life conflict with the scarecrows, only to be proved wrong. He and Tim joined the British Army in World War I, serving on the Western Front. Tim eventually passed Hutchinson in rank and saved his life on the battlefield.
Because the Tenth Doctor's fob watch had afforded Tim a glimpse into his own future, he knew the precise moment that he needed to get Hutchinson and himself out of the way of an enemy artillery round. (TV: The Family of Blood)
