- King Charles I of England is executed for treason by the Rump Parliament ("The Roundheads").
- John Aubrey publishes his study of the megalithic stones at Avebury and begins developing his theories about the ancient Druids. Having attended one of his parties and noting he has "a great sense of humor," the Doctor is of the opinion that Aubrey made up Druidism as a joke ("The Stones of Blood").
