Revision as of 17:59, 26 March 2023
For simpler reading, our valid sources page mainly concentrates on the guidelines surrounding valid sources. The following list — which is comprehensive but probably not completely exhaustive — is for people who like to look at the world in a more detailed and specific way. Although we may have missed the odd story here, you can probably assume that if a story doesn't appear on this list, it's not a valid source.
If you think we've missed something, please start a thread at the Panopticon requesting clarification.

Comics
Range/Work | Approved by | Are there exceptions? |
---|---|---|
DWU-based comics from Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Radio Times, Battles in Time, TV Comic, Countdown/TV Action, TV Century 21, Polystyle Holiday Special, Doctor Who or Dalek annuals, Incredible Hulk Presents, or any other publication which may in future hold a licence from the BBC. | the four little rules; specific cases confirmed at Forum:Is The Forgotten a reliable source?, Thread:213311, Thread:177099, Talk:Tales from the TARDIS (comic series), etc. |
Yes: various stories which are parodical or otherwise not intended to be set in the DWU, such as Doctor Who?; a handful of stories which do not have enough of a narrative to pass Rule 1, such as And Introducing.... Thread:246276 disallowed coverage of Death's Head: The Body in Question. Thread:272468 ruled the BBC Writers' Comics invalid. Thread:177099 ruled the WeLoveTITANS comics invalid. |
Individually-licensed Dalek comics such as The Dalek Chronicles and comics from the Dalek annuals | Forum:Canonicity of Dalek Annuals | Yes: Strange to Tell… According to the Daleks, which isn't narrative enough to pass Rule 1 of the Four Little Rules, and Deadline to Doomsday, which is unproduced as far as licensed Who is concerned (the completed version has never seen a licensed printing). |
Faction Paradox comics | the four little rules | No |
Miranda | the four little rules | No |
Cutaway Comics's Doctor Who spin-offs (e.g. Lytton) | the four little rules | No |
Prose
Range/Work | Approved by | Are there exceptions? |
---|---|---|
Original novels and anthologies made under a BBC license, bearing the logo of Doctor Who or one of its BBC spin-offs | the four little rules | Yes. Some short stories which don't pass Rule 4, such as Verity or TARDIS Stolen!. In addition, any information gleaned from The Infinity Doctors must be described as being true of "The Infinity Doctors universe" — not the mainstream DWU. |
Bernice Summerfield Virgin New Adventures | the four little rules | No |
Novelisations | Thread:231243 | Yes, although not for a Target novelisation: the novelisation of Scream of the Shalka is held to take place outside the valid DWU like the webcast on which it is based. |
The Adventures of K9 | the four little rules | No |
Prose stories from the Dalek annuals | Forum:Canonicity of Dalek Annuals | No |
Faction Paradox prose works | Thread:206566 | Yes: stories which were only ever published in charity anthologies, such as The Time Wrestlers |
P.R.O.B.E. prose works | the four little rules | No |
Iris Wildthyme (and related) prose | Early Wildthyme books, Forum:Iris Wildthyme: should she stay or should she go? | Generally no. However, Iris stories only published in charity anthologies are not to be covered by the Wiki. In addition, stories predating Iris's permanent "inoculation" into the DWU, namely the Phoenix Court series of novels, had no tie to the DWU upon release and are consequentl not covered on the Wiki. Thread:117545 also ruled that The Periodic Adventures of Señor 105, a spin-off of Obverse's Iris Wildthyme books, fell outside the scope of this Wiki except insofar as it once again crossed over with Iris's worl ddirectly. |
Cyberon | the four little rules | Yes: Under Construction, while printed in the anthology, had no connection to it nor indeed the DWU |
TV & other video media
Range/Work | Approved by | Are there exceptions? |
---|---|---|
Regular episodes and holiday specials of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, K9 and K9 and Company. | The original inclusion debates | A few, as noted on the main page |
BBV Productions or Reeltime Pictures home videos | BBV and canon policy | Many exceptions in BBV's case, as noted in detail here |
Tardisodes, Prequels & other BBC minisodes | the four little rules | A few: e.g. Thread:208762 ruled She Said, He Said invalid on Rule 1 grounds, and P.S., Spider Dalek Friend from the Future are considered "deleted scenes" and consequently invalid. |
Miscellaneous DWU-licensed webcasts | the four little rules; specific cases confirmed at Thread:246613 |
A few: e.g. many Big Finish animated "prequels" are marketed as "trailers" and are thus invalid |
CGI replacements, Special Editions and other official reedits of official stories | Thread:149385, Thread:211198 | Yes: the VHS version of Shada narrated by a fourth-wall-breaking future Doctor is considered "one long deleted scene" |
