Ying Wai was an old man living in a Chinese coastal village in 1807, with his son Ying Ki.

When a pirate queen walked into their town square, intent on smashing the statue at its centre, Wai tried to warn her off, holding her at sword-point. She threatened his life in return, but before she could follow through the statue began to crumble and explode, revealing Marsissus inside. The Sea Devil Marsissus then killed Ying Wai with a glowing cutlass.

When the Thirteenth Doctor later analysed Ying Wai's body, she recognised that his wounds bore signs of hexo-toxic poisoning, meaning he was killed with a Sea Devil biological weapon. (TV: Legend of the Sea Devils)
